Hillel - Teacher of Jesus
One of five Zugoth, an authority
of the Mishna.
Oldest complete manuscript of the
Mishna, of the XIIIth century, is
preserved in the Library of Parma, Italy.
Hillel: Young Master, cast your rule into the fire,
so that it may perish, and the power of all
sovereignty may yet diminish, save the
Rule of One.
Jesus: I understand, Master. That is the zeraim
of nothingness. The first fruits of absence
shall taste sweet to the tongue
of Fortune.
Jesus takes a slender, golden chain from
his neck and lays it in the shadow
made by the body of his teacher.
Which is lengthening, for it is the
after-noon, and the mind of the gold
is momentarily and joyfully refreshed
from the heat.
Jesus: Tell me more, Master.
Hillel: Young Master, observe the feast and the fast
of the falcon. For the falcon is trained,
and wreaks no havok, unless commanded
to do so.
Jesus: I understand, Master. That is the Moed
of toil. The observance of sabbath
which is another word for rest, which
follows the naming of things.
Jesus takes some sweet-scented ash from
the brazier beside them and with it anoints
the shadow made by the body of his teacher.
Which is lengthening, for it is the
after-noon, and the mind of the ash
is momentarily and joyfully dignified
from obscurity.
Jesus: Tell me more, Master.
Hillel: Young Master, show yourself to the faces
of the women. Be not invisible to love.
For, even if you decide to stay alone, you
kindle a great good-will in doing so.
Jesus: I understand, Master. That is the Nashim
of expressiveness. The sweet gaze of the
opposite sex and scent destroys the chains
put on memory and freedom.
Jesus takes pomegranate, fig and date from
the bowl between them and lays these things
in the shadow made by the body of his teacher.
Which is lengthening, for it is the
after-noon, and the mind of the food
is momentarily and joyfully strengthened
from sacrifice.
Jesus: Tell me more, Master.
Hillel then speaks of damages, holy things and
purifications.
This is what he said:
Hillel: Young Master, when the world was young
there were no laws of damage, injury,
property, buying, selling, lending, hiring,
renting, heredity, punishments, cities,
refuges or oaths.
Young Master, be yourself the law of these things.
Let your thought endure as would a tall
tower, built by God.
Jesus: I understand, Master. That is to say. I am
the ripening of time. I contain all wars.
arguments, journeys, harbors, appointments
and deeds.
This is the Nezikin of ethics, and testimony.
Jesus stains the master’s shadow
with a few drops of wine.
Hillel then speaks of damages, holy things and
purifications.
This is what he said:
Hillel: Young Master, surround yourself with the
fire that is within you. Let all things burn
from your holiness. Let every sacrifice, every
offering, every first born, every vow, every
sacrilege and every temple catch flame.
Young Master, that you, yourself, be holiness,
Let your thought flow forth as a great river
of God-Flame.
Jesus: I understand, Master. I am the all or nothing.
Each One Is. Each individual is the bearer
of the God-Flame, stolen from His Self, while
sleeping in the world.
This is the Kodashim of ritual, and structure.
Jesus stains the master’s shadow
with a wreathe of smoke from the incense.
Hillel then speaks of damages, holy things and
purifications.
This what he said:
Hillel: Young Master, death is impure. Choose to live.
Live even in death, Young Master. Choose to
listen and remain faithful to the sky and its
clouds, the sea and its waves, for their voice
is your voice, too.
Young Master, be pure in the haven of your
loyal self. Let your thought be the rising sun
and moon, set in motion by the in-dwelling God.
Jesus: I understand, Master. I am the light of
all purity. I am the undivided stone.
I am the illuminated and pure city of Angels.
Space calls to Time. Time calls to Space.
And I, myself, am the seeing-stone.
This is the Toharot of the return of the exile.
Jesus stands himself in the master’s
shadow, and then, he is everywhere, always.
